50 euro – Pope Francis Holy Year MMXXV
Series: Vatican City – Gold 50 euro coins
In the silent heart of a night in 1216, a simple man, barefoot and clothed in humility, raised his eyes to heaven. It was Francis, the poor little man of Assisi, praying before the crucified Christ in the darkness of a cell. But that night, he was not praying for himself. His heart was open to the world. “Lord, I ask not for myself, but for all. For those who will come here with sincere hearts. Grant them Your mercy, Your embrace that does not judge, Your forgiveness that heals.” That prayer, filled with humility, crossed the centuries. And it is that same invocation which today takes form and light on this 50-euro gold coin, struck for the Jubilee of 2025 to celebrate the Perdonanza of Assisi, an eternal sign of reconciliation and divine love. In the scene, Saint Francis is depicted in fervent prayer, his hands outstretched toward Christ, his face lifted upward, as if engaged in an intimate and moving dialogue. Before him, the Crucifix responds with silent compassion: an encounter that needs no words, yet speaks fully of a living, authentic, self-giving faith. Behind them, the stylized Porziuncola — small yet central — serves as a reliquary for that mystery. It is not merely a place: it is a threshold of light, an icon of mercy, where heaven touched the earth and grace became accessible to all. Gabriele Di Maulo’s composition, refined and symbolic, arranges every element with sacral balance. The light of the mirrored background, alternating with matte surfaces, enhances the details and invites contemplation. This coin preserves the secret of that night. An invitation, today as then, to believe in forgiveness, to allow oneself to be touched by a gaze that does not condemn but heals.
