200 euro – The Song of My Cid

Series: Spain – Gold 200 euro coins

The Song of My Cid is an anonymous epic poem that recounts heroic exploits inspired by the latter years in the life of the Castilian gentleman Don Rodrigo Diaz de Vivar. It is the first extensive narrative work in Spanish literature penned in a Romance language. The Spanish Royal Mint, wishing to pay tribute to one of the most important works in the history of Spanish literature, has minted three theme-related collector coins. The obverse reproduces an anonymous likeness of the Cid Campeador drawn in the 19th century. The reverse reproduces a fragment taken from the title page of the "Chronicles of the very industrious gentleman the Cid Ruy Diaz Campeador" that is housed in Spain's National Library.
