2 euro – Sede Vacante MMXXV

Series: Vatican City – Commemorative 2 euro coins

This coin commemorates the Sede Vacante, the period between the end of a pontificate and the election of a new Pope. At its centre is the coat of arms of Cardinal Kevin Joseph Farrell, Camerlengo of the Holy Roman Church, who was entrusted with managing the Holy See’s assets during the interregnum. Surmounted by the umbraculum and crossed keys, symbols of papal authority in the absence of a pontiff, the coat of arms evokes the solemnity and institutional continuity of the Church. The dove depicted in the legend represents the Holy Spirit, invoked to enlighten the cardinals as they discern God's will in choosing the new Pope. The coin pays tribute to the Camerlengo’s role during one of the most delicate phases of ecclesial life.
