10 euro – 60th Anniversary of the Priestly Ordination of Benedict XVI

Series: Vatican City – Silver 10 euro coins

Joseph Ratzinger was ordained a priest on 29 June 1951, the Feast of Saints Peter and Paul. This year marks the 60th anniversary of that fundamental day in his life of faith. In addition to the series of postage stamps released last June, the Philatelic Office is marking this important anniversary with a silver 10 euro coin. On the coin are depicted the Apostles Peter and Andrew while fishing at the Sea of Galilée. Both are looking the shore right at the moment Jesus calls them saying, "I will make you fishers of men ". The representation captures the key moment of the call and vocation to the priesthood. The artistic realization of the coin is the work of Guido Veroi, a sculptor who has authored numerous numismatic works for the Vatican and other countries, and who is known for his unique style and deep religious sensitivity.
