In Austria, all children are taught to leave the house ‘neat and tidy’, meaning with their nose blown and their hair combed. The meaning of neat and tidy may have changed over the course of history, but some things have remained the same, including traditional clothing made from regional materials such as linen, leather, loden and antler. A dirndl is essentially a tight bodice with a wide skirt and an apron over it; the variations in its length and colours are almost inexhaustible.
