Pedro Hispano, born in Lisbon, probably in 1205, was an extremely important figure in European culture and the first - and so far only - Portuguese Pope, taking the name of John XXI. A doctor, theologian and philosopher with immense prestige, he even graced the pages of Dante¿s Divine Comedy. For the VIII centenary of the birth of Pope John XXI, the Portuguese Mint and Official Printing Office paid homage to the memory of the Portuguese Pontiff and sage by minting commemorative collector coins, designed by the sculptor Isabel Carriço Branco.
