The reverse of the coin features a likeness of Marie Curie, ceded by the Curie Museum (coll. ACJC) in Paris. At left, the lettering Marie Curie. At right, AÑO INTERNACIONAL DE LA QUÍMICA. Below this, the mint mark, the logotype in Spanish of the International Year of Chemistry, the text 10 EURO (the face value of the coin), and a portrayal of some laboratory vessels. The obverse portrays the likeness of His Majesty King Juan Carlos.
The year 2011 has been declared the International Year of Chemistry (IYC). The initiative springs from a joint proposal of the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in recognition of the achievements made in the field of chemistry and the contributions they have made to benefit mankind.
